Bob CP's Report on the Window Repairs at SS

Bob CP's Report on the Window Repairs at SS

St Stephens Church has a wonderful number of Victorian painted and stained glass windows, but over the years the settings and some of the glass has deteriorated and needed to be repaired and replaced.  I made contact in early 2020 with Heritage England to see if they had a scheme where they provided 100% of funding for work on the windows, and after some negotiations they approved a full grant of nearly £18,000 to carry out the repairs.

The application required not only paperwork to be considered as competition for grants is intense, but also photographic evidence and we are so fortunate to have the skills of Alastair Chalmers who not only featured the windows at risk but has produced a full record of every window including the hidden windows which lurk behind the organ away from view.

This photo shows the intricate detail of the repair work.which was carried out following on the award of the grant from Heritage England.

Appointment of jh stained glass

Appointment of jh stained glass

We were allowed to appoint jhstainedglass who are based just down the road and they have been a joy to work with and their knowledge and work nationally on cathedrals, churchs, heritage buildings has been a real asset and will leave those windows in the best position for surviving for years to come.

The photo shows the new copper wires which were installed.

I am extremely grateful to the staff at Heritage England, to Emma at the Diocese for her support, to Mike & Steve at jhstainedglass and to Alastair for making this all happen to benefit our building.
