LENT, AND WINTER TREES

LENT, AND WINTER TREES

In her poem, ‘Lent’, Jean M Watts talks about how beautiful winter trees are, and how before leaf and
flower you can see the stars through the branches.

Jesus talks about the Reign of God, the ways we see God alive and active in the world - like stars shining in the darkness. And the way the Reign of God is apparent today is through the church, and our lives.

Lent  by Jean M Watts

Lent is a tree without blossom, without leaf,
Barer than blackthorn in its winter sleep,
All unadorned. Unlike Christmas which decrees
The setting-up, the dressing-up of trees,
Lent is a taking down, a stripping bare,
A starkness after all has been withdrawn
Of surplus and superfluous,
Leaving no hiding-place, only an emptiness
Between black branches, a most precious space
Before the leaf, before the time of flowers;
Lest we should see only the leaf, the flower,
Lest we should miss the stars.

Corona Virus Clarification

All services and events at St Stephen's Church are suspended until further notice.

We are building a database of people who are especially vulnerable in our parishes so we are best placed to respond to need. If you would like to be on this, or know someone else who would be, please let Philip or Debbie know
