If you are reading this because you have recently become engaged, congratulations! We love a good wedding at Saint Stephen’s and we’ll help you to have a service that you’ll remember for ever.
A church wedding is not just about a beautiful venue, which St Stephen's certyainly offers – it’s about making a lifelong commitment to another person in the presence of God and your community of family and friends. Many couples say that they sense God’s presence even if they are not churchgoers – if you engage with the real depth of a church wedding then you will find the experience a deeply moving occasion as well as a fun, exciting and joyous one.
One of the first places you can go to find out more about being married in church is a website provided by the Church of England. Click on the green tab below to take you to their weddings page:
Who can get married in a church building?
Anyone who is resident in the parish of Saint Stephen's or our sister church, St Mary's Charlcombe (or is on the Church Electoral Roll) or who has a qualifying connection (see below) can marry at St Stephen's. We do marry divorcees at the rector’s discretion. You can marry in a CofE church if you can show:
That one of you:
- has at any time lived in the parish for a period of at least 6 months or
- was baptised in the parish concerned or
- was prepared for confirmation in the parish or
- has at any time regularly gone to normal church services in the parish church for a period of at least 6 months or
That one of your parents, at any time after you were born:
- has lived in the parish for a period of at least 6 months or
- has regularly gone to normal church services in the parish church for a period of at least 6 months or
That one of your parents or grandparents:
- was married in the parish
This means that if you like Saint Stephen’s and you’d like to be married here, but have no previous connection to the parish, you can qualify by attending a Sunday service at least once a month for at least six months. Not only will you experience being together with the church family, but by the time you get married you’ll be a part of it: this will be your church!
